While searching Salon, on daily basis (yes, I’ve come to be addicted) I stumbled upon this article, and I was shocked. The title alone made me take a second look “Rape Only Hurts If You Fight It.” The piece itself is a opinion editorial by John Petroski. I could go into depth into describing it, but it’s really necessary to read to get the initial shock and expression I received just from the short blurb they placed in this article. Petroski goes as far to say that rape has “advantages.” Such as, letting an “ugly women,” have the ability to “know the joy of intercourse.” That’s completely, APPAULING.
I’ll take a walk out on a limb to say that most women, regardless of appearance, would not enjoy some random man forcing anything sexual upon them. Virgin, or not, physically forced actions aren’t enjoyable. I’m completely disgusted that this man had the nerve to discuss this, sensitive topic for women like he has knowledge of it. I realize rape also affects males, but it is mainly an issue with women. Especially to assume they would enjoy it? Ridiculous. Apparently he totally disregarded the serious physical consequences, not only emotional consequences of rape. Unwanted pregnancies, and STD’s and others. This article has already gotten 16 comments, and I expect many more to be added to that.
This serious issue our society has, is one of those often left unspoken issues because it deeply affects a number of people in our society. So I’m very surprised he choose to write how bluntly and opinionated as he did with this piece.
Opinions anyone?

I think that this is an incredible article. Is her serious? People like him should be thrown in jail. I have not been raped however, anyone who has or who knows someone who has must be appauled. This article shows that humans are heartless. “ugly people” don’t deserve to be raped, everyone has a spirit, does’t a person’s heart and soul matter instead of what they look like? I cannot believe that someone could think this way.

Ok, wow. I had to rewrite my reaction to this article three times to my include any obscenities. First, I really hope this is, as the author clammed satirical because I find it hard to believe anyone would actually admire/celebrate rape (as the article apparently does). Therefore, assuming this was actually intended to be a satyrical representation of sensationalist journalism the author has very very VERRY, pore judgment. Rape is a painful topic and a painful experience that far to many people have had to endure; often with lifelong physical, and psychological consequences.
The following are some sad facts:
Somewhere in America, a woman is raped every 2 minutes, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
In 1995, 354,670 women were the victims of a rape or sexual assault. (NationalCrime Victimization Survey. Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice, 1996.)
Over the last two years, more than 787,000 women were the victim of a rape or sexual assault. (National Crime Victimization Survey. Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S.Department of Justice, 1996.)
The FBI estimates that 72 of every 100,000 females in the United States wereraped last year. (Federal Bureau of Investigation, Uniform Crime Statistics, 1996.)
SILENT VICTIMS :
One of the most startling aspects of sex crimes is how many go unreported. The most common reasons given by women for not reporting these crimes are the belief that it is a private or personal matter and the fear of reprisal from the assailant.
Approximately 28% of victims are raped by husbands or boyfriends, 35% by acquaintances, and 5% by other relatives. (Violence against Women, Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Dept. of Justice, 1994)
The FBI estimates that only 37% of all rapes are reported to the police. U.S. Justice Department statistics are even lower, with only 26% of all rapes or attempted rapes being reported to law enforcement officials.
In 1994-1995, only 251,560 rapes and sexual assaults were reported to law enforcement officials — less than one in every three. (National Crime Victimization Survey, Bureau of Justice Statistics, U.S. Department of Justice, 1996.)
An overwhelming majority of rape service agencies believe that public education about rape, and expanded counseling and advocacy services for rape victims, would be effective in increasing the willingness of victims to report rapes to the police. (Rape in America, 1992, National Victim Center with Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center.)

Wow! I’m disgusted. I’m actually glad you posted this blog because I feel very strongly about rape and sexual molestation. Let me just start by saying a man (or woman) that rapes or molests another human being should be made to rot in a maximum security jail cell. I think they should have to be reminded every day of what they did to an innocent human being. Rape is a horrific act. Even though it may only happen to a person once, it stays with them forever. If the victim has to suffer throughout his or her life shouldn’t the person who committed the crime be forced to do the same? After reading the article you posted about, I can tell you it makes me sick. Why would ANYONE say such things? I could go on forever about this, but let’s just say the vision of being raped or molested never goes away. No one should ever have to experience this.

I can not even believe someone would even think that way! With the amount of women that are raped! You’ve got to be kidding me! Why would he even say any of this?! Seriously he should be thrown in a psych ward and they should find out what is missing in his head that he would wirte anything to that extent! Some guys think rape is a big joke and don’t feel that it is rape! But if they so no, IT IS! Ugly or not they still have feelings, can talk, and see! they know that they don’t want you so get off! I just don’t get it and feel really sick about this! How can he not get in trouble for that! Many people do not understand how important this matter really is! If they do not know someone, or have been a victim themself they truly do not understand! it is serious! no matter, age, sex, or race! Everyone that has been a victim thinks greatly about every person they talk to and it takes a long time for them to trust any one! I think there should be a lot more done about this then is being done. Many rapists go free because people do not turn them in! TURN THEM IN! you can really help others by doing so. You do not want this to happen to anyone else!

I realize that there are these people in the world, but seriously if your as ignorant as this man is DON’T admit it!! This is one of the most unbelievable blogs I have ever seen & I think it’s good that you wrote about it. Obviously this man has no class and no sense of emotion because there’s no way he could say these things if he did. I think that this is a disgrace to anyone who has sympathy and anyone who has ever been effected. Since when does appearance make someone susseptible to violence..rape at that. I think this man should maybe experience something like this and then he’ll realize how wrong he is.
